Blog Post: Beyond Colgate: Urban Sociology Goes to NYC
In October 2015, 16 urban sociology students and I traveled to the Lower East Side of Manhattan to conduct mini ethnographies of various places and spaces in the neighborhood. An important site of NYC history and urban change, the Lower East Side offered us an incredible range of locations and communities to illustrate course themes. "Zines — inexpensive, self-published magazines — started in the 1930s and made periodic resurgences every few decades as a way to give ink to writing that was incongruous with mainstream media. Now they’ve made another resurgence as part of the broader movement for social justice at Colgate."

"On Tuesday, February 23, students, faculty and staff gathered in the Center for Women’s Studies for a brown bag titled, “Zines: Feminism and Do-It-Yourself Media.”
Visiting Assistant Professor Kimberly Creasap of Sociology began the conversation by outlining the concept of Zines. She explained that Zines are non-commercial, non-profit, small-scale magazines that are produced, published and distributed independently. The presentation consisted of a brief historical overview and explanation of Zines, an analysis of Zines as a medium and a collaborative Zine-making activity...."
